How to Make the Fluffiest French Toast for Breakfast (2020)

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and in my opinion, it's because it has the best foods. One of these amazing foods is French toast: a true example of taking normal food and making it amazing. A simple piece of bread becomes the centerpiece of a delicious breakfast (or any other meal. We don't judge here).

But French toast can be a bit picky. If you don't make it right, you end up with soggy bread and that does not scratch the French toast itch. We're here to show you the secret to fluffy, sweet, delicious French toast. All it takes is a few simple tweaks to the recipe and process, and your toast will turn out perfect. Get ready to be a breakfast hero. This toast is tops.

Mix it up!

We're going to start with the classic first step: mix the dry ingredients. You're going to want 1 cup of all-purpose flour (this is the secret ingredient), 2 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of sugar, and 1 tsp of ground cinnamon. Grab a mixing bowl and get to work stirring it all up.

The perfect vessel

You want to make sure that you're using a bowl that has plenty of space for you to get in there and stir until everything is combined. I personally love this set of bowls, because it not only has a big boy for mixing my dry ingredients (and works fine if I want to double my recipe), but it also has other options for our wet ingredients. I also love the little colors on the bottoms of the bowls. It helps me know exactly what I want at a glance.

Next up you'll want to grab 1 cup of milk, 2 eggs, and one tsp of vanilla extract (although I like to add just a touch more). Take one of those other bowls from our beautiful set, and whisk these babies together. Really go for it. You want it to be smooth and creamy by the time you're done.

Whisks galore!

We're going to be doing a lot of whisking in this recipe, so I like to make sure I've got more than one whisk on hand. I always reach for one from this set. They're sturdy, come in multiple sizes, and can get popped into the dishwasher when I'm done with them. They're great for this recipe of many whisks.

Now for the exciting part: mix it all!

Ok this might freak some of you out, but we're going to make a batter that is lumpy. Yes, lumpy. Mix your wet and dry ingredients together and whisk the heck out of it. There will still be lumps. That's ok. We're about to head into the actual toast part of this French toast recipe, so grab your bread (thick slices please) and start pre-heading a nonstick skillet or griddle.

The right griddle goes a long way

My favorite griddle is this one. It's a great size: not so big that you feel like you have to rearrange your whole kitchen to use it, but still plenty of space for all your French toast needs. Plus it's nonstick, and easy to handle. If you don't have a nonstick pan, you can coat your pan with oil or cooking spray, but I'd say just buy the nonstick. It's worth it.

Dip it. Dip it good.

Here's where we get into the toasty part. Dip your bread slices into the batter. Make sure you've dipped each side, and let the extra drip off. Right after you dip that bread goes on the skillet. Leave it until it's browned, then flip and do the other side. You should end up with a beautiful golden brown, and oh so much fluff. Pop it off the griddle and time for the fun part: presentation.

Presentation is everything.

There are all kinds of ways to finish off your French toast, but one of my favorites is to add some powdered sugar to the top. I feel even fancier when I use these shakers, which also come with stencils so that you can make pictures on your French toast. SO CUTE.

Top it off with some syrup

Of course no French toast is complete without some sweet, sweet syrup. If you're like me, you always end up dripping on the bottle the syrup comes in. That's why I like to keep mine in this cute little syrup container. I can wash it off easily, and pour at just the right rate. Plus it makes me feel like I'm in a diner.

The last and most important step

I must stress the importance of this final step. If you don't do it, all the previous steps will have been wasted. The last step is to chow down on your delicious French toast. Savor that sweet, fluffy goodness. You earned it.
